The problem appears at the exact moment it stops without warning.

The essentials

In a crash at 50 km/h, an object hits with about twenty times its weight.

The rear shelf is the worst spot in the cabin: nothing holds it back, and it’s at head height.

Heavy items go on the trunk floor, flat against the seatbacks : that way it can’t gain momentum.

An object rolling toward the pedals falls under article R412-6 of the traffic code.

Five minutes, just once, is enough: pick a spot for each item, then stick to it.

What actually happens in a crash

When a car hits an obstacle, it stops over the length it is able to deform: about half a metre for a modern car at 50 km/h. The occupants, held by belts and airbags, stop with it.

Whatever is not attached carries on at 50 km/h. It will only stop when it meets something: a seat back, a headrest, someone's neck.

The arithmetic is not mysterious. Going from 13.9 metres per second to zero over half a metre is a deceleration of roughly twenty times gravity. An object therefore takes a force equal to twenty times its weight.

A 1.5-litre bottle of water hits like 30 kg.

A 2 kg laptop hits like 40 kg.

A 5 kg bag of shopping hits like 100 kg.

A 10 kg toolbox hits like 200 kg.

These are not brochure figures: it is elementary arithmetic, and it is why safety testing has long called for restraint nets behind the seats of estate cars.

The three places that cause trouble

The parcel shelf. The worst place in the cabin: nothing holds the object, it sits at head height, and it crosses the whole interior in a straight line. People still put tissue boxes, umbrellas and speakers there.

The passenger seat. An unused belt holds nothing at all, and a bag put there heads for the windscreen or the footwell — where your pedals are, including during a merely firm braking.

The boot of an estate or an SUV with no cover. With no net and no bulkhead, the boot is open to the cabin. A suitcase there has the whole length of the car to accelerate before meeting a seat back.

What works, in order

The general rule fits in one sentence: the heavier it is, the lower, further back and more wedged in it must be.

The boot floor, against the rear seat backs. The safest position for anything heavy. An object pressed against the seat back cannot build up speed.

A net or a bulkhead if you regularly carry volume, or if you drive with a dog.

Hanging vertically for the soft bags of daily life. A headrest hook holds the bag against the seat back instead of leaving it loose on a seat. The load stays low, pressed flat, and out of the footwell.

Nothing on the parcel shelf, ever. It is the cheapest habit to adopt and the one that changes the most.

A hook is obviously not an approved safety device, and we do not sell it as one: it keeps a bag from lying around and sliding under the pedals. To carry something heavy and hard, the only right answer is still the boot floor.

Children and animals

In the back, the danger rarely comes from a forgotten object: it comes from what we hand children during the trip. A tablet held at arm's length, a metal flask, a rigid toy. Prefer soft and light, and keep the rest in a seat-back pocket rather than on the bench.

For a dog, no amount of storage replaces a safety harness or a secured crate. An unrestrained twenty-kilo animal represents, in a 50 km/h crash, the equivalent of four hundred kilos thrown forward.

What the traffic code says

There’s no article that names « an object left on a seat » specifically. What exists is broader, and stricter than most people think.

Article R412-6 requires the driver to remain at all times able to carry out, easily and without delay, all the maneuvers required of them. An object rolling toward the pedals, a load shifting, an animal moving around the cabin: all of this falls under this rule, and the fine can reach a flat penalty of 135 euros.

A second rule concerns the load itself: it must not cover the lights and license plate, must not compromise the vehicle’s stability, and must not block the driver’s view. A trunk loaded up to the ceiling, fully blocking the rear window, falls under this.

Finally, a point insurers know well: after an accident, an unsecured object can be brought up in the liability assessment. The debate then centers on your compensation, months later, based on the paperwork.

What each object really weighs

Apparent weight in a frontal crash at 50 km/h, at about twenty times gravity

Object

Actual weight

Force on impact

Phone

0,2 kg

4 kg

Water bottle

1,5 kg

30 kg

Laptop

2 kg

40 kg

Shopping bag

5 kg

100 kg

Medium-sized dog

15 kg

300 kg

Toolbox

10 kg

200 kg

Checked suitcase

20 kg

400 kg

These orders of magnitude explain something counterintuitive: it’s not the size of the object that matters, it’s its mass and hardness. A half-liter metal bottle is more dangerous than a large cushion, because it concentrates its energy on a few square centimeters.

The trunk of a wagon or an SUV

On a sedan, the trunk is a separate compartment: a suitcase thrown forward hits the rear seat and stops there. On a wagon, a minivan or an SUV, the trunk and the cabin form a single volume, and nothing stands in the way.

Three levels of protection, from most effective to lightest:

The partition or separation grille fixed to the vehicle’s anchor points. This is the only solution that holds back a heavy load.

The cargo net stretched behind the seat backs. It stops bags and light items, and above all keeps them from shifting around.

Low, flat loading against the seat backs, with nothing stacked above the seat line. It’s free, and it already covers most of the benefit.

SUV Trunk Storage Net — 51,99 €Holds bags and loose items across the full width of the trunk.

The five minutes that solve the problem

This isn’t about fitting out your car, it’s about deciding once and for all where everything goes. Go through it, just once, in this order:

Empty the rear shelf. For good. Nothing belongs there, ever.

Move down to the trunk floor everything heavy and hard, packed against the seatbacks.

Give a closed space to what needs to stay accessible: glove box, armrest, under-seat box.

Hang soft everyday bags instead of leaving them on a seat.

Check the footwell before you drive off. It's the only spot where an object can stop you from braking.

Under-Seat Storage Box — 19,99 €A closed, low spot for what needs to stay in the car without ending up on a seat.

For emergency items that must stay within reach while seated — window breaker, seatbelt cutter — the rule is the opposite: they're only useful if you can reach them without unbuckling. Their place is the door or the console, not the trunk. The load also must not block the lights, plate, or visibility.

</details>
<details>

How much force does an object develop in a 50 km/h crash?

About twenty times its weight, because the car stops within half a meter of crumpled metal.
