The real difficulty isn’t legal, it’s practical — condensation, cold rising from the floor, and the fact that a reclined seat has never let anyone sleep six hours straight. Here’s how to go about it.

The essentials

Sleeping in a legally parked car is allowed. It’s municipal orders and the ban on camping that regulate the rest.

Never with the engine running: risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, and it’s a fineable offense.

A a flat mattress changes everything; a reclined seat doesn’t give you real sleep.

Ventilate through two opposite openings, otherwise condensation covers everything within one night.

Cold comes from the ground : it’s underneath you that needs insulating, not just on top.

What the law says, precisely

No French law prohibits sleeping in a vehicle. A tired driver who stops at a rest area to sleep is actually doing exactly what road safety guidelines recommend.

What is regulated is something else:

Parking. You need to be parked where parking is allowed, and respect the posted time limit. At highway rest areas, a maximum duration is usually indicated at the entrance.

Camping. Setting up a table, an awning, chairs — that’s camping, banned outside designated campsites, and punishable. Staying inside the vehicle is not.

Municipal ordinances. Many coastal or tourist towns ban overnight stays in inhabited vehicles on certain parking lots. The sign at the entrance is what counts.

One point deserves to be said clearly: if you’ve been drinking, sleeping in your car is a good decision, but settle into the back seat, and keep the keys out of the ignition. The line between « sleeping in a vehicle » and « being behind the wheel » comes down to details you have no interest in having to argue about on the side of a road.

The one absolute rule: engine off

When it’s very cold or very hot, it’s tempting to leave the engine running to keep the heating or air conditioning on. This is the one thing in this article you should never do.

A running engine produces carbon monoxide. This gas is odorless, colorless, and it seeps into the cabin through the air intakes, especially if the car is parked in a poorly ventilated spot, against a wall, or in the snow with a partially blocked exhaust pipe. You fall asleep, and you don’t wake up.

Incidentally, leaving an engine running while parked can get you fined. But it’s not the fine that should stop you.

Lying down, or nothing

A reclined seat lets you doze for forty-five minutes at a highway rest stop. It doesn’t let you sleep through the night: your body stays bent, your neck keeps looking for support, and you wake up every hour.

On almost all cars, the rear bench folds down and creates an elongated surface with the trunk. It’s never flat: there’s always a step between the folded seatbacks and the trunk floor, and a slope toward the front.

That’s exactly what an inflatable mattress designed for the cabin fixes: it fills in the gaps, evens out the step, and turns an uneven surface into a level bed. With a built-in pump, inflating it takes a few minutes and requires no lung power or extra accessory to remember.

Inflatable mattress with built-in pump — 44,99 €For sleeping flat in the trunk or on the folded rear bench. Also works under a tent.

Two measurements to check before buying anything: the available length with the seatbacks folded and the tailgate closed, and the width at the wheel arches, which is always the narrowest point.

Condensation, the real problem of a night in the car

A sleeping adult releases a considerable amount of water through breathing. In a space as enclosed as a car cabin, this water settles everywhere: windows, trim, ceiling light. By morning, everything is damp, and the windshield takes ten minutes to clear up.

So you need air circulation, and a single opening isn’t enough: air only comes in if it can go out somewhere else. The method that works is to crack open two opposite windows diagonally, by just two or three centimeters — for example, front left and rear right.

Two or three centimeters are enough to renew the air without opening the car up. In rainy weather, point the opening away from the wind, and accept a bit of dampness on the floor rather than fog everywhere.

Cold comes from the ground

It’s the classic first-night discovery: you brought a thick blanket, and you’re still cold. The reason is simple — the metal floor is in contact with the outside air, and it draws body heat away by conduction, something a blanket laid on top does nothing to stop.

The correct order is therefore: insulate underneath first, then cover yourself.

An air mattress, or failing that a camping sleeping mat, between you and the metal.

A blanket or a sleeping bag on top, never underneath: compressed, a sleeping bag no longer keeps you warm.

A hat. The head is what stays exposed, and that’s where the heat escapes.

As a booster, a 12V heated seat cover warms things up effectively at bedtime — as long as you run it with the engine on, before settling in, then switch it off. A heating element drawing on the battery for hours with the engine off will leave you with a car that won’t start in the morning.

Privacy and light

Sleeping behind clear windows, under a parking lot lamppost, is unpleasant and draws attention. Suction-cup sunshades on the side windows solve both problems at once: no one can see you, and the light drops enough to fall asleep.

For the windshield, an exterior cover does the same job, with an extra winter benefit: no frost to scrape off when you wake up.

Side Window Sunshades — 16.99 € for a set of 2Suction-cup fitting, removed in two seconds. Privacy at night, shade during the day.

Finally, plan for a standalone light. The interior light draws on the battery and lights up the whole cabin; a rechargeable magnetic LED light sticks wherever you want, can be aimed, and also comes in handy the day you need to change a tire at night.

Where to park for a good night's sleep

The choice of location determines the quality of the night more than the gear does.

The possible spots, and what they’re worth

Location

Pros

Cons

Highway rest area

Restrooms, lighting, constant traffic

Truck noise, limited stay

Secondary rest area

Much quieter

Isolated, often without lighting

Town parking lot

Quiet, close to shops

Check the municipal notice at the entrance

RV area

Designed for this, water and drainage

Paid, sometimes reserved for RVs

Three habits to keep, wherever you are: park on flat ground — sleeping on a slope wakes you up every hour —, lock the doors once you're settled, and put away anything visible from outside in the trunk.

The packing list

A mattress or an insulating mat, and a sleeping bag or a blanket.

Some sunshade for the side windows.

A standalone flashlight, charged.

Water, and something to eat without having to get out.

A charger that works with the ignition off, or a power bank.

Earplugs, if you sleep near a road.

On charging your phone, check before you leave whether your cigarette lighter socket stays powered with the ignition off: this is only the case on some cars. Otherwise, a power bank avoids waking up the dashboard every two hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details>

Is it legal to sleep in your car in France?

Yes. No law forbids it, and resting when you’re tired is even recommended. The limits come from parking rules — you must be parked where it’s allowed, within the posted time limit — and from the ban on camping outside designated sites, meaning setting up outside the vehicle.

</details>
<details>

Can you sleep at a highway rest area?

Yes, that’s what it’s for. A maximum parking duration is usually posted at the entrance to the rest area. Choose a spot away from the truck zone, where refrigeration units run for part of the night.

</details>
<details>

Can you leave the engine running for heat?

No, never. Carbon monoxide produced by the engine can seep into the cabin, with no smell or warning sign, and poisoning happens during sleep. Leaving an engine running while parked can also get you fined.

</details>
<details>

How do you avoid condensation when sleeping in a car?

By cracking open two opposite windows diagonally, about two to three centimeters. Air only circulates if it can enter on one side and exit on the other: a single cracked window isn’t enough to clear the moisture from breathing.

</details>
<details>

How do you stay warm at night in your car?

By insulating what’s underneath you first. The metal floor draws heat away from your body through contact: a mattress or a floor mat makes more difference than an extra blanket. Then cover yourself on top, and keep your head covered.

</details>

What to take away

Three things make the difference between a sleepless night and real rest: a flat surface, insulation under the body, and two windows cracked open diagonally. The rest — privacy, light, charging — is a matter of comfort and takes ten minutes to sort out.

And one rule is non-negotiable: engine off, always.
