The rest — chains, windshield washer fluid, tire pressure — comes down to preparation, and can be handled in one October morning. Here’s the list, in order of urgency.

The essentials

The battery gives out in winter because the cold reduces its power right when the starter needs it most.

Mountain Law: du 1er November to March 31, mandatory equipment in municipalities marked with a sign.

Never hot water on a frozen windshield: the thermal shock can crack it.

Setting off with just a small cleared patch is a violation, and the leading cause of morning accidents.

La tire pressure drops by about 0.1 bar for every 10°C lost.

The battery, the number one reason for calling roadside assistance

A car battery loses a significant part of its capacity when the temperature drops. At the same time, the engine oil thickens and the starter draws more current. A battery that barely held up in November won’t make it through the first real freeze.

The warning signs are always the same, and they come weeks before the breakdown:

The starter turns over more slowly in the morning than during the day.

The lights dim noticeably when starting the engine.

The car struggles to start after two or three days without being driven.

If you recognize these symptoms, have the battery tested — it’s free at most auto centers. And keep in mind that a battery over four years old showing these signs won’t make it through winter.

A portable jump starter doesn’t replace a new battery: it just saves you from waiting an hour for another car willing to stop. Charged and stored in the trunk, it starts a gas or diesel engine with no cables and no second vehicle, and it also works as a power bank for a phone.

600A Battery Jump Starter — 49.99 €Start your car on your own, with no cables and no second vehicle. Recharge it twice a year to keep it ready.

If you also need to keep an eye on your tire pressure, the version with a built-in compressor combines the two items you always end up needing at once in cold weather.

The frozen windshield: the five minutes that matter

Two mistakes happen every winter morning, and both come at a cost.

Hot water. Pouring hot water on glass at minus five degrees creates a sudden temperature shock on a surface under stress. The windshield can crack instantly, or an existing chip can spread into a spider web. Replacing a windshield runs into the hundreds of euros.

The peephole. Scraping a small circle in front of the steering wheel and driving off is against the law: traffic regulations require a clear field of vision, and that also applies to side windows and mirrors. Above all, it’s the surest way to miss a cyclist in a blind spot at the first intersection.

The right method in freezing weather: start the engine, put windshield defrost on full blast, outside air with AC on — the drier air defrosts faster this way — then scrape while the cabin warms up. Windshield washer fluid is useless as long as the glass is frozen.

The only real solution is not having any frost at all. A cover placed the night before on the windshield comes off in ten seconds in the morning, frost and all.

Anti-frost windshield cover — 14,99 €Placed at night, removed in the morning with the frost on it. Doubles as a sunshade in summer.

Magnetic-fit models have an edge in strong wind, and those that also cover the mirrors spare you the most annoying scraping job, the mirrors. Just check that your car has metal frames : on some bodywork, the magnets don’t get a grip.

What the law requires in the mountains

Under the Montagne law, from 1er November 1 to March 31, vehicles driving through municipalities designated by prefectural order must be equipped. These zones are marked by a sign at the entrance and exit.

Two ways to comply:

Four winter tires or all-season tires bearing the 3PMSF marking — the mountain and snowflake pictogram.

Removable devices in the trunk: metal chains or textile socks, allowing at least two drive wheels to be equipped.

Textile chains have the advantage of being light, going on without a jack, and without kneeling in the snow. They’re suited to occasional use: a road up to a resort, a one-time mountain pass. They wear out very fast on dry road, though, and tear if you drive too long without snow.

Textile snow chains — 23,99 €Fitted without a jack, in a few minutes. Check the compliance marking and your tire size before buying.

Two checks before buying, in this order: the exact size printed on the tire sidewall, and whether your car accepts this type of equipment — some models have too tight a wheel well, and the manufacturer’s manual specifies it. Do a test fit in your garage, not on the side of a snowy road after dark.

The four October checks

The pre-winter check, in order

To check

The threshold

Why now

Tire pressure

The manufacturer’s setting, cold

It drops by about 0.1 bar for every 10 °C lost

Tread depth

3 mm recommended in winter (1.6 mm legal)

Below that, water and snow evacuation collapses

Windshield washer fluid

A product rated for at least -20 °C

Plain water freezes in the lines and cracks the pump

Wiper blades

No streaking when they pass

A hardened blade scratches the glass and no longer wipes away melting snow

On pressure, a detail few people know: the low-pressure warning light on many cars comes on precisely with the first cold snap, without any leak at all. It’s physics, not a puncture — but you still need to reinflate, since too low a pressure hurts grip and fuel consumption.

Cordless Tire Inflator — $30.99Automatic shutoff at the chosen pressure. Saves the detour to the gas station for 0.2 bar.

Fogging, the other morning enemy

In cold, damp weather, the cabin fogs up as soon as several people get in. The reflex many drivers have — blasting hot air on recirculation — is exactly the opposite of what’s needed: recirculation just cycles the cabin’s humid air over and over.

The effective combination comes down to three settings: outside air (definitely not recirculation), AC switched on even in winter, since it dries the air, and blower directed at the windshield. Defogging becomes three times faster.

If fog keeps coming back, look for water somewhere: soaked floor mats, a faulty door or trunk seal, a clogged AC drain line. A cabin holding water will fog up as long as the water is there.

What to keep in the trunk between November and March

A scraper and gloves, within easy reach — not buried at the bottom of the trunk.

A battery booster charged.

Your chains or snow socks, if you’re heading toward mountain areas.

A standalone flashlight, because it’s dark by five p.m.

Le reflective vest inside the cabin, not in the trunk: it must be put on before getting out of the car.

A blanket, for waiting on the side of a road.

LED Magnetic Work Light — 19,99 €Sticks to the bodywork and frees up both hands. Built-in warning lights.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details>

Can you pour hot water on a frozen windshield?

No. The sudden temperature difference can crack the glass, or turn an existing chip into a spreading crack. Use the car’s defrost, a scraper, or better: a cover put on the night before, which avoids the problem entirely.

</details>
<details>

Are snow chains mandatory in the mountains?

Du 1er November 1 to March 31, in municipalities designated by prefectural order and marked with a sign, you must have either four tires marked 3PMSF, or chains or socks to equip two drive wheels. Outside these zones, nothing is required.

</details>
<details>

Why does my battery always die in winter?

Because cold reduces the battery’s capacity right when the engine, with its thickened oil, demands the most current. A battery that’s already worn out gets through summer unnoticed and stops working at the first frost.

</details>
<details>

Should you top up tire pressure when it’s cold?

Yes. Pressure drops by about 0.1 bar for every 10°C lost: that’s why the warning light often comes on with the first cold snap, even without a puncture. Check when cold and reset to the pressure specified by the manufacturer.

</details>
<details>

How do you quickly demist a windshield in winter?

Outside air rather than recirculation, air conditioning on even in extreme cold — it dries the air — and the blower aimed at the windshield. With recirculation, you keep cycling the cabin’s humid air and the mist stays.

</details>

What to take away

Have the battery tested before November: it’s the most common breakdown and the easiest to prevent. Put a cover on in the evening, you’ll save five minutes every morning and you’ll never crack a windshield with hot water. And if your route goes through the mountains, try your chains at home, in the dry, before you actually need them.

Everything for this season is gathered in our winter and bad weathersection, and breakdown essentials in the roadside assistance.

The battery, the frozen windshield, the Montagne law, and the four checks for October.
