Wheel dirt is not mud: it is brake pad dust, red-hot when it lands, which works its way into the lacquer. It settles between the spokes, in the recesses and behind the wheel \u2014 precisely where a sponge and a wash mitt do not reach.<\/p>\n
A stiff brush scratches painted wheels, and the marks show on a black or anthracite wheel from the very first wash. The long, soft fibres reach into corners by following the shapes, without ever attacking anything.<\/p>\n
That is the point to watch on a wheel brush: a bare shaft or a metal ferrule always ends up touching the paint. Here the shaft is sheathed all the way to the tip.<\/p>\n
Rinse the wheel, apply a cleaner, let it work, then brush from the centre outwards. Use a different bucket from the one for the bodywork: brake dust carried onto a door afterwards means guaranteed scratches.<\/p>\n
