A dash cam is first and foremost proof
A dash cam doesn't make driving safer: it earns its place the day an accident report is disputed. That's why resolution matters less than people think, and two details matter far more: license plates readable at night, and recording that truly starts on its own when the engine turns on.
In France, filming the public road from your vehicle for personal use is allowed. Sharing that footage publicly is another matter: it contains license plates and faces, so personal data. Handing a video over to an insurer or the courts, on the other hand, is not a problem.
Front, rear, cabin: how many channels
- One channel films the road. That's the useful minimum, and it's enough for most disputes.
- Two channels add the rear, useful for parking dents and rear-end collisions, very common in the city.
- Three channels add to the cabin. It's the format used by VTC and taxi drivers; for private use, it's mainly useful if you lend the car out.
Monitoring while the engine is off requires a permanent power supply: that's the role of the hardwire kit, which draws power from the fuse box and cuts off automatically when the battery drops below a threshold. Without it, a camera plugged into the cigarette lighter socket turns off with the ignition on most cars.
Backup camera: what you see and what you don't
A backup camera shows the immediate blind spot behind the bumper, the one where a child or a post disappears completely from the mirrors. It doesn't replace a parking sensor: the image gives position, not exact distance, and judgment remains up to the driver. On wired models, plan for routing the cable to the front; that's the step that takes the most time to install.
Anti-theft devices: deter, not prevent
A steering wheel lock or a wheel-to-seatbelt lock doesn't make a car invulnerable. They add time and noise to a break-in, and they're visible from outside: that's exactly what makes a thief choose another car. For an older vehicle without a factory alarm, it's the best deterrence-to-price ratio. A battery cut-off switch, on the other hand, meets a different need: cutting power to a vehicle that stays parked for a long time, or during a repair.
Emergency equipment
A window breaker and seatbelt cutter aren't mandatory in a private vehicle in France, unlike a safety vest and warning triangle. They're useful in a rare but specific case: a jammed seatbelt or doors stuck after an impact. One rule is worth remembering — a tool stored in the trunk or glove box is useless. It needs to stay within reach while seated at the wheel, seatbelt on.
The questions we get asked
- Is a dashcam legal in France?
- Yes, for personal use. The footage can be handed over to an insurer or to the courts. Sharing it publicly, however, is regulated, since it contains license plates and faces, which are personal data.
- Can my dashcam record while the car is parked?
- Only if it's powered continuously. On most cars, the cigarette lighter socket cuts off with the ignition: you need a hardwire kit on the fuse box, with automatic cutoff when the battery gets low.
- Does a steering wheel lock really protect against theft?
- It slows down and deters, it doesn't prevent. Its value lies in how visible it is from outside: faced with two similar cars, a thief picks the one that doesn't require extra tools.
