Description
The day the door will not open
A collision that jams the doors, leaving the road into a flooded ditch, a belt that will not unlatch: in those minutes, you have neither the time to search nor the room to take a swing. A window breaker may never be used — but if it is used one day, it has to be reachable while seated, with your belt on.
What it does, in practice

The gesture, in two steps
You pull off the cap, press the tip against a angle of the side window — the middle resists more — and the striker fires by itself. For the belt, you present the U-shaped opening against the webbing and push forward. A test glass disc is supplied with each tool: enough to check that the mechanism works without sacrificing a window.
Where to keep it
One adhesive mount is supplied for each tool. It is stuck where your hand will go for it without undoing your seat belt: door pillar, side of the centre console, bottom of the dashboard. In the glovebox it stays reachable; in the boot or a rear cubby, it is of no use at all.
What it does not do
It will not break a windscreen: that is laminated glass laminated, two layers bonded onto a film, made precisely so as not to shatter. On many recent cars, the front windows are laminated too — the marking laminated ou acoustique is often printed in small type on the edge of the window. A window breaker will make a hole in it, not an opening. Look at the edge of your windows before relying on one: that is the only check that really counts.

When it earns its place
The door that will not open
After a collision, a deformed door can stay jammed while everything else is fine. The side window then becomes the fastest way out — provided you have something to break it with, without leaving your seat.
The belt that will not unlatch
A retractor that jams, a distorted buckle, pressure on the mechanism: the belt that was protecting you becomes what holds you. The U-shaped blade cuts the webbing in one forward movement.
The car in the water
A submerged car equalises its pressure before a door can be opened. A spring-loaded striker works underwater, where an elbow has no effect.

Will it break a windscreen?
No, and no window breaker does. A windscreen is laminated glass: two layers bonded onto a plastic film, designed to crack without falling apart. A car's emergency exit is the side windows.
How do I know whether my side windows can be broken?
Look at the small print on the edge of the window: "tempered" indicates glass that shatters, "laminated" or "acoustic" glass that will not give way. More and more recent cars have laminated front windows; the rear windows are often still tempered.
Does it take any force?
No, and that is the whole point of the spring-loaded striker: the tip concentrates the force on a single point and fires by itself when you press. A child could do it — all the more reason to leave the caps on.
Where should you strike the window?
On a corner, or a few centimetres from the edge. The middle of a window is the part that resists best.
What are the glass discs supplied for?
To check that the striker works, without breaking a window on the car. You hold them flat on a hard surface, fire the tool onto them, and you know.
